August Book of the Month: Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth by Wole Soyinka

Every month, members of the Naija Book Club vote to choose a book that will challenge, entertain and provoke discussion. For August 2026, our community has selected one of the most ambitious works in contemporary Nigerian literature.

Our Book of the Month is Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth, the acclaimed 2021 novel by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.

Inspired by reports that Nigerians rank among the happiest people on earth despite enduring enormous challenges, Soyinka crafts a biting political satire that is equal parts mystery, social commentary and literary fiction. The story follows Dr. Kighare Menka, a respected surgeon whose routine work takes a disturbing turn after he uncovers a gruesome black market operating within his hospital. What begins as a medical mystery gradually unfolds into a wider examination of power, corruption, greed, religion and the moral compromises that shape society.

As with many of Soyinka’s works, readers should expect sharp wit, memorable dialogue and a narrative that demands careful attention. This is not a novel that hands over its meaning easily. It invites readers to question institutions, challenge assumptions and reflect on the contradictions of modern Nigeria.

Whether this will be your first Soyinka novel or you are already familiar with his writing, we hope you’ll join us throughout the month as we read, share reflections and prepare for what promises to be another lively discussion.
