Naija Book Club

Our Bookful Thoughts

Book Review Session

Highlights from Our “The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma” Book Review Session

On Sunday, June 28, members of the Naija Book Club gathered from across continents and beyond for what turned out to be one of our most memorable discussions yet. Our June Book of the Month, The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma, did exactly what great literature is supposed to do. It entertained us, unsettled us, challenged our assumptions, and kept us talking long after the meeting ended.

For 75 minutes, readers from different parts of Africa, Europe, and beyond came together to unpack one of Nigeria’s most celebrated contemporary novels. There were passionate arguments, moments of laughter, thoughtful disagreements, and several occasions where participants admitted that they had interpreted the same scenes in completely different ways.

That, perhaps, is the beauty of reading together.

A Story About Brothers, But Also About Nigeria

At first glance, The Fishermen is the story of four brothers growing up in Akure during the 1990s. Yet as our discussion unfolded, it became clear that Chigozie Obioma’s novel is about far more than one family.

Members reflected on the destructive power of fear, the weight of prophecy, sibling loyalty, masculinity, mental health, and how words can become self-fulfilling. Others drew connections between the novel and wider Nigerian society, asking difficult questions about leadership, violence, superstition, and the stories communities tell themselves.

Several participants remarked that although the novel is deeply rooted in Nigerian culture, its themes are universal. Families everywhere wrestle with trust, conflict, love, and loss.

Different Readers, Different Perspectives

One of the highlights of every Naija Book Club meeting is discovering how differently people experience the same book.

Some readers sympathised deeply with particular characters. Others challenged those views with equally compelling arguments.

Was fate inevitable?

Could the tragedy have been prevented?

How much responsibility belonged to the prophecy itself, and how much belonged to the people who believed it?

These questions generated thoughtful conversations that reminded us why book clubs are about much more than summarising plots. They are opportunities to think collectively, to test our ideas, and to appreciate perspectives we may never have considered on our own.

Celebrating Our Readers

No Naija Book Club meeting is complete without celebrating our amazing community.

Congratulations to our book giveaway winners, who walked away with free airtimes. These giveaways are our small way of thanking members for investing their time in reading and contributing meaningfully to our discussions.

Every month, we are reminded that the strength of our club lies not just in the books we choose, but in the people who show up with curiosity, honesty, and a willingness to learn from one another.

Looking Ahead to July

Stay tuned for the announced of our book for July.
