There are some authors whose names are so deeply woven into the story of Nigerian literature that it almost feels impossible not to have read them.
Professor Wole Soyinka is one of them.
And yet, somehow, after years of reading, discussing and discovering books together, Naija Book Club is reading a Wole Soyinka book for the very first time.
This Sunday, August 30, we will gather for our August Book Review to discuss Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth, Soyinka’s acclaimed novel and one of his most recent major works.
And we are particularly excited about this one.
Our First Wole Soyinka Book
Wole Soyinka needs little introduction.
The Nobel Prize-winning playwright, poet, novelist, essayist and activist has spent decades producing some of the most important literary and intellectual works to emerge from Nigeria.
His body of work spans poetry, plays, novels, memoirs, essays and criticism. From The Man Died to Death and the King’s Horseman, Ake: The Years of Childhood, The Interpreters and countless other works, Soyinka has consistently used literature to examine power, politics, culture, corruption, identity and the human condition.
Yet despite his extraordinary catalogue, we have somehow managed to get this far without reading one of his books as a club.
Until now.
About Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth
Published in 2021, Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth is Soyinka’s third novel.
Set in a fictionalised Nigeria, the novel takes readers into a world of political corruption, religious exploitation, greed, crime and the absurdities of power. It is dark, satirical and, at times, deliberately outrageous.
But beneath the humour and absurdity are questions that will feel remarkably familiar to Nigerian readers.
What happens when people who are supposed to serve society begin serving themselves?
What happens when corruption becomes so normal that it is almost impossible to distinguish the absurd from reality?
And what does it mean to remain hopeful in a society where institutions and individuals are constantly being tested?
These are just some of the questions we will be bringing to our discussion.
And, as Always, We Want to Hear From You
A Naija Book Club review is never simply someone standing in front of a room telling everyone what a book means.
It is a conversation.
You may have loved the book. You may have struggled with it. You may have found parts of it hilarious, frustrating, confusing or brilliant.
Perhaps Soyinka’s satire worked for you.
Perhaps it didn’t.
Perhaps there is a character or passage that has stayed with you.
Whatever your experience, we want to hear it.
Because one of the best things about belonging to a book club is discovering that the same book can mean completely different things to different people.
And, of course, there will be a little extra motivation for those who participate.
